Quick recap.

  • Add 's for a singular possessive; add just ' for a plural already ending in s; plain plurals take no apostrophe.
  • it's = it is; its = belonging to it. Possessive pronouns (its, their, whose, your) never take an apostrophe.
  • Expand contractions (it is / they are / who is) to test whether an apostrophe belongs.
