Before you start

Quick recap.

  • FANBOYS = comma before (IC, and IC). Subordinator = makes a DC. Conjunctive adverb = semicolon before, comma after.
  • 'however / therefore / moreover' are adverbs — a comma alone before them between two ICs is a splice.
  • A subordinator can turn either clause into a DC; that changes which punctuation is legal.
